Obituary for Edward J. Riley

Edward John Riley, “Eddie”, age 60, died peacefully on May 15th 2020 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital after a very courageous battle with 911 related brain cancer.
Eddie was born on June 10th, 1959 in Brooklyn, NY and attended Holy Family School and Bishop Loughlin High School before taking classes at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Eddie worked at Thompson Financial until he joined the New York City Transit Police in 1985 where he received several awards. Due to an injury, Eddie was forced to retire early from his dream job. After a short time working as a Deputy Sheriff in Oregon, he went on to work for the US Marshall Service guarding Federal judges. When the World Trade Center was attacked on 911, Eddie responded in an effort to locate his brother Jim, also a NY Transit Police officer. With Jim safe, both brothers along with their aunt, Cindy Fajadro (Washington State FEMA Response team) spent many weeks working on recovery efforts on “the Pile” at WTC.
Eddie was well known as someone you could always count on and always made you laugh, both on the job and with his family and friends. Throughout his fight with brain cancer, Eddie never stopped joking and making even his doctors, nurses and therapists happier with his infectious laugh and comedic personality. Eddie truly loved life to the fullest. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Eddie is preceded in death by his father, Edward Malachy Riley and brother-in-law, James Fitzpatrick. He is survived by his mother and caregiver, Elaine Riley, his sister, Beth Fitzpatrick, his brother Mark Riley and wife Maria, his brother James Riley and wife Kathleen. Eddie was a loving father to his two sons James and Edward (Cheech), and granddaughter Shea. He was a beloved uncle to 4 nieces and 5 nephews.
There will be a service for Edward on Tuesday, May 19th, for family and friends at LEONE FUNERAL HOME, 696 4th avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11232. 718-768-4000. The service will take place between the hours of 1pm and 5pm. He will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday May 20th.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Edward’s name to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital or the NYPD Widow and Orphan fund.
