Obituary for Shirley Foster - Solano

Shirley Leolin Foster-Solano (nee White), was born to Samuel Foster and Grace Ann White in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica on September 10, 1948. In 1963, Shirley’s older sister, Marilyn, moved to the United States. She would later send for the rest of her siblings and Shirley arrived in New York in August 1968 on a student visa.

Shirley married Wallingford Lee in 1972. Their union would produce two daughters, Wallinda and Kassandra Lee. Though their union ended in 1977, they remained life-long friends.

Shirley worked as a secretary and attended college at the same time. She worked for J. Henry Schroder and Marine Midland Bank. She would eventually tire of office life and become a teacher for the New York City Department of Education. Her first teaching job at was Erasmus High School where she taught Spanish. She later became a middle school Spanish teacher. Shirley had an endless thirst for learning. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1980. Shirley would later go on to earn three different Master’s Degrees. One in Education, another in Spanish and the last one in Bilingual Counseling, respectively. Shirley retired from teaching in 2012 after more than 30 years of service. She leaves behind her strong legacy in education.

Besides learning, another one of Shirley’s greatest loves were her children, Wallinda and Kassandra. They were her constant companions in life and often traveled with her to her native Costa Rica, every chance they could get. Shirley remarried in 2001 to Jose Solano-Raabe. Shirley and Jose enjoyed music and traveling together.

Shirley was funny, loving, nurturing, strong willed, driven and a fighter. Shirley leaves to cherish her memory: Jose, her husband, her loving daughters, Wallinda Lee and Kassandra Lee-Loomis, her sons in law: Thomas Loomis and Robert Garcia, her siblings: Albert White, Marilyn Meza, Eleanor Crawford, Arlene White, Walter Foster and Imelda Downs. Shirley also leaves behind possibly her greatest love, her granddaughter Khloe Ann Loomis. Khloe and Shirley were best friends who enjoyed having tea together and making beds. Shirley also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews whom she adored as well.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” Matthew 5:4
